Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (4/5)

This novel starts slow containing in-depth details about how Katniss is dealing with her life after the victorious result of the games. It focuses more on the characterization of Katniss than the idea of the plot itself. The author starts it 6 months after Petta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen won the 74th Hunger Games. Meanwhile, they proceed to live their life as they did before, although, this year was different as there were stress levels removed from Katniss’ mind. She could feed her family and live a carefree life as long as the public and President Snow still had a view inside her life. Katniss was blind to the fact that President Snow had a way closer insight into her life than she thought. She is later called into a meeting with the president she is informed of her rebellious actions towards the Capitol. These ventures are spreading throughout the districts causing questioning and hatred which is creating consequences for herself and affecting her family and close friends' lives. Katniss is educated that the only way this can be fixed is by lying to the capitol about her choice of saving Peeta so she needs to portray that her decision was straight from the raw emotion of love and not anarchy. She then leaves with Peeta to go speak to the public and please them. Katniss is very stubborn so she is having a hard time listening to President Snow and subsiding his wishes because she knows her family is at risk for her actions. President Snow decides to change the dynamic of the Hunger Games and throws a huge twist at both Katniss and Peeta… This novel was a great read it keeps you wanting to continuously turn pages because of the author's word choice and in-depth detail. This book never lets you know what the path to the end is and focuses importantly on each character and how they proceed in life. My advice to the future reader is to patient attention to the details of the novel and to intently read because that is what I think the author wants you to do. Another piece of advice I would give to the reader is to stick with it because the ending is totally worth it. For me, it was a little hard to stick with the novel because the start is slower but the second half of the novel is 100% worth it. Overall I would give this novel a ⅘ because I think it was such a well-written book but the start was a little slow for me, although, I really enjoyed the plot and will definitely be reading this book again.
