Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (4/5)

The 74th Hunger Games has ended, and Katniss lives a much more comfortable life in the Victor’s Village. At her home, Katniss finds President Snow, who threatens to take Gale’s life if Katniss does not convince the president and others that she still loves Peeta. Soon after, the main protagonist and Peeta are taken out on the Victory Tour and give speeches to the other districts, many of which give signs of wanting rebellion. Soon after, Peeta publicly proposes to Katniss to show their “love for each other”, but President Snow still does not believe it to be enough. The dynamic duo attend a feast at the President’s mansion and proceed to return back to District 12, Katniss finding out there is an uprising. District 12 spirals as Peacekeepers ramp up on restrictive control of citizens and the mines close, leading Katniss to want to start an uprising. After receiving dresses from President Snow, the main protagonist heads into the woods against her own safety and meets two people who are going to District 13, which was supposedly demolished 75 years ago. She leaves them and injures herself, realizing while looking at her television that the people she met in the woods were telling the truth about the Capitol reusing footage of District 13. Weeks later, Katniss’s style team arrives to prepare her for her wedding photo shoot, learning of the uprisings in other districts. The broadcast of the Quarter Quell (75h Hunger Games) explains previous winners must return as well as double the amount of competitors than the regular amount in the Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta end up being the representatives for District 12 and meet other competitors. The duo teams up with Finnick Odair and Mags from District 4 and Beatty and Wiress from District 3. After scaring the Gamemakers, Katniss and Peeta go on Caesar Flickerman’s show and unite with the other competitors. Katniss and the other competitors star in Quarter Quell, fighting for their lives through obstacles like acid-like fog. They figure out there are 12 different sections like a clock in the arena, each one being its own hour. Katniss figures out how to break the barrier above with a lightning struck arrow. She and others are pulled out of the arena and learns from Gale that District 12 has been destroyed.

Overall, I was originally thrilled to read the next book in the trilogy of the Hunger Games considering I had thoroughly enjoyed the first book. It was mostly an enjoyable piece of literature, although not as stunning as the first one. I liked the characters, but wished it had more thrill to it instead of more than half of the book being away from the Hunger Games, which was the original focal point of The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games is an enjoyable series as I would recommend it for anyone who loves action, thrill, and a hint of romance.
