Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo (4/5)

This book takes place directly after the first book, Six of Crows, its story being only a few days apart. The first part of the book is mainly about successfully getting a member of their crew that has been kidnapped back from a man named Jan Van Eck. Jan Van Eck is one of the main villains in this story. He is a very wealthy man from a royal family that will go to great lengths to preserve his name's reputation. After they successfully get their friend back, they set out on a new mission to sabotage Jan Van Eck’s main source of income, and rescue a Grisha he has in captivity. Grisha’s are people who have special abilities, each one being in a different class and being able to do different things. When they go through with their plan, they are attacked, and find out that Pekka Rollins, the leader of the gang that they are a part of, has allied with Jan Van Eck, and has backstabbed them. The grisha they were originally trying to rescue is being put up for auction, so they set out to steal him once again. They are successful this time, but as they are making their escape, right before they get free, one of the main characters named Matthias is unexpectedly shot, and later dies. The crew makes their escape in the end. Overall, I think this was a good book, and it is worth it to read both books in the series. What surprised me most in the book was Matthias’ death, as it seemingly had no foreshadowing or build up.
