Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (5/5)

A documentary, with no pictures, only words, all compacted into 400 pages to read in one nail-biting sitting.

Daisy Jones is the definition of natural talent. She stuns every man with her beauty and every human with her raspy singing voice that allows her every emotion to shine through. On the other hand, The Six began with a pair of musically-gifted brothers, Billy and Graham Dunne, and grew into an extraordinary band. Sharing the same label, the two eventually combine to create what can only be described as magical.

Set in the 1970s, Daisy Jones and the Six takes over the world with their soul-wrenching lyrics accompanied by a forbidden romance. Daisy Jones and fellow lead singer Billy Dunne have a tangible chemistry that is felt throughout every show. The rest of the band are merely side characters in the Daisy and Billy show. Their quick rise to fame brings not only their talent but their tense relationships to light. The personalities of the other band members add bits of color to the main love story, keeping the reader on their toes with their volatile emotions and actions.

The character development of Daisy and her grasp on life, drugs, and her emotions fully engages the reader to root for her until the very end. Reid does a fine job in expanding outside Daisy and Billy consistently, bringing us mini-stories of the other characters' struggle for the spotlight. Tension is built quietly in the band, stirring and always reminding itself the reader. The format being an oral history is a refreshing format for readers that allows every character’s perspective to contribute and humor to lighten moments. The book takes a serious tone at times when necessary, touching on topics that often are refused to be acknowledged or admitted. The beauty of sacrifice, the pain of wanting something you cannot have, and the magic of those feelings intertwined with music flourish on the pages and make for a smiling-through-tears novel.

Overall, this novel is a must-read due to its main lessons of sacrifice and unrequited love, all balanced with jovial commentary and blooming relationships between the characters. The dedication of Taylor Jenkins Reid is bolstered by her original song lyrics written to further enhance the reading experience. Alike to her other fiction novels, Reid pulls the carpet out from under her reader with a plot twist that raises questions yet offers answers. This book is very memorable and is necessary for a second or third read, especially in preparation for the television miniseries that is based on the novel.
