This story follows a nine-year-old boy named Danny, who lives alone in a caravan with his father, William, beside their filling station, which is their only source of income. Danny was raised from a very young age by only his father because his mother unexpectedly died when he was 4 months old. Danny and his father are very close and share everything. From car mechanics to wildlife, everything Danny knows was taught to him by his father. Since Danny was a little boy, his father has been a role model to him, so it shocks and confuses Danny when he wakes one night to find that his father has woken up late at night and left. When he returns, Danny confronts his father and he confesses as to why he was sneaking out late at night. This leads to Danny and his father creating a dangerous plan to get back at the land owner named Victor Hazel.
I think this book is quite memorable for teaching children a lesson and keeping it interesting at the same time. I disagree with the fact that their plan was illegal, and since Danny was young and viewed his father as a role model, he saw no problem with his father's decisions. Although I disagree with the way Roald Dahl’s message was portrayed in the book, I agree with Roald Dahl’s message. He is trying to tell children, when they grow up, don’t act like every other parent. Be different and be “sparky”. I also like how the whole book was written from a child's perspective, and everything was told as it was seen, leaving you to figure out the deeper meaning, allowing you to find your own message inside the book. I feel as if the book taught me how to be a good parent through Roald Dahl’s message and that having a good relationship means even more than what it seems to be.
I think that this book is an amazing read overall, with a great message and storytelling. This book is definitely worth reading, even just for a good book to read, not to read the book for the deeper meaning; it is brilliant either way. I advise if you try reading this book, you should take your time and enjoy it; the book is not long (214 pages) but by reading it slowly, it will feel like it was 500 pages worth of information. Roald Dahl is a great author and if you enjoy Danny the Champion of the World, I strongly recommend reading any other book by him.
