The book begins on March 18, 1998 with an airplane pilot named Mike Havel, who is flying a family to their farm for their vacation. All seems normal, but all of the sudden there is a bright flash and the airplane engines cut out, none of the electronics are functioning either. The plane crashes in a river and the passengers are forced to evacuate. Mike and the family have to survive in the cold wilderness of Idaho without any electronics. Combustion and gunpowder doesn't work either, so they have to stick with medieval and primitive technology to survive. At the same time, Juniper Mackenzie is playing music in a bar when everything goes dark, no electronics or combustion is working for them either, they have to take horse drawn carts with supplies out of the urban areas that are being reduced to rubble and chaos. Months later the city Portland is being run by a madman who is murdering the citizens of the city if they do not cooperate with him and his growing empire. The book follows the story of Mike Havel, Juniper Mackenzie, and other factions in Idaho, Oregon, and the Northwestern United States. People all across the world are forced to survive without the assistance of modern technologies. The source of the change in this universe is unknown, some people claim it to be of a greater power, such as a god or spirit that decided to take revenge on the human race for all of the harm they have done to each other and for the damage they have inflicted upon the world and climate. Other people believe it to be the cause of a more advanced species that perhaps did not want us advancing too quickly. Nobody truly knows the source of it, but everyone has to face the consequences. This book is an amazing read and keeps the reader engaged the whole time. The author does a great job in describing this new dystopian world that has had all of their technology taken away, and all of the unique ways that the people living in this world have to adapt and revert to methods no longer used in the modern world. This is an amazing book and kept me hooked for the entirety of the time..
This book is very entertaining and fun to read, however it is more geared towards adults as there is some language, gruesome scenes, and some other stuff that would be inappropriate for younger audiences. The book may be slightly challenging for some to read, but otherwise, I highly recommend this book to everyone.
