Divergent by Veronica Roth (4/5)

Are you a fan of The Hunger Games or The Giver? If yes, Divergent, written by Veronica Rother would be the novel for you! Divergent is a novel following ‘Tris’, a hard-working and determined girl, and her experience throughout a society in which at age 16, children are sorted into one of the five ‘factions’ of society. Amity for peace, Dauntless for bravery, Erudite for wits, Abnegation for selflessness, and Candor for honesty. The main character Tris believes she is different than her family, who belong to Abnegation, and when the time comes, she leaves them, starting a new chapter of her life all by herself, joining Dauntless. Throughout the novel, she discovers new things and people and even finds out a few new things about herself. I myself was a big fan of this book because of its genre and contents. It is dystopian but provides a very nice and interesting story, and as stated before, is similar to The Hunger Games. It has a certain type of story/storytelling, so if you were a fan of Fahrenheit 451, I could not recommend it to you. The actual contents of the book itself are quite simple and straightforward, so it does not take a large amount of effort to read. It is on the longer side of novels, so it would be harder to finish in one setting, but if you were to read it all in one shot, I would recommend keeping a small notepad, as mentioned in my previous review for And Then There Were None, and take a few notes, noting the characters names, labels, personalities, etc… because as the book progresses, more characters and development are introduced. While this book is a dystopian title, I believe it does relate in some ways to today's current society, in a way that we do as humans tend to section ourselves off into groups, and from those groups, create both negative and false perceptions about others without trying to understand what they are going through. This book does a good job of telling that bit because when Tris chooses to leave her family, she is told many different things about other groups and people, and some end up not even being true, but in the heat of things, changed the way she saw them.
