The book, “Divergent” by Veronica Roth is an astonishing post-apocalyptic novel that describes the hardships of fitting into a dystopian society. This book features Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who is the sixteen year-old protagonist. The society in the novel is split into 5 main factions (groups): Dauntless (The Brave), Abnegation (The Selfless), Erudite (The Intelligent), Amity (The Kind), and Candor (The Honest). Every member of this society is born and raised in a particular faction. Once you become of age, you are invited to a choosing ceremony and allowed to pick which faction you would like to live in for the rest of your life. Tris is from Abnegation and is facing pressure by her family to choose Abnegation during the ceremony. The Abnegation faction dresses in the same gray clothes and almost live a simulated perfect life. She shocks her family and herself when she chooses Dauntless at the ceremony. Dauntless could not be any more different from Abnegation. The Dauntless love adrenaline rushes and excitement through dangerous stunts, like jumping onto moving trains. The choosing ceremony creates suspense on how Tris will ever fit into a life she doesn’t know. She has to create new friendships and try to acclimate to this action-packed lifestyle. In Dauntless, there is a requirement where the initiates are ranked and the lowest ranked are kicked out and become factionless. Factionless are rejected by society and live on the streets, without a home. It is very hard to be factionless in this society. Tris has to overcome challenges from her fellow newcomers, such as harassment just from being from Abnegation, to survive and thrive. While this is happening, Tris falls in love with one of her instructors, Four. Four is training her and her fellow cohort and believes that Tris will succeed as a Dauntless. It is later revealed that Four has mutual feelings for Tris as well. This entire novel is both about how she will find her identity within a completely new life and also how she will balance her love and training. I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoyed The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner, as these trilogies all appeal to young adult readers who enjoy dystopian fiction. This book was an amazing read and I really enjoyed it to the fullest!
