Dogsong takes place in Alaska where an Eskimo Boy named Russel is fed up with his dad's excessive amount of coughing from smoking and the snow-machines. Russel went to Oogruk who is an amazing storyteller and veteran in his village when Oogruk brought up how the missionaries had changed the tradition of the village and how everybody had their own personal song. Russel was inspired so Oogruk gave him the chance to learn the old way and find his song by giving him old weaponry, his dogs, and a sled. Russel soon went on to hunt where he felt as if he was at home and always remembered Oogruk’s advice to be with the dogs and talk to them. Oogruk had made the decision of dying peacefully on the north shore and had told to Russel to go head out on his own eventually his dreams where suddenly became reality when he encountered an abandoned pregnant woman by the name of Nancy who Russel had dreamt about and had helped her with labor where she gave birth to her baby. When Russel Jounry was over he had a song about his relationship with dogs and how dogs will always be a part of his life which is the Dogsong. I felt this book was very well written and showed the human vs. nature aspect of life. It showed how sometimes in life your going to haft to make hard decisions and maybe the outcome would be memorable to you. I felt as if the book really tried to show how it's ok to be different in life. Though I felt very engaged while reading Dogsong and its choice of literature was very well thought out. Gary Paulsen really did good a job writing this book. I highly recommend this book to readers who are into fiction stories about nature or a long journey with important events in between. Furthermore, if you are really into Gary Paulsen and his books this is another book you should check out from him. All in all, that is why I gave Dogsong ⅘ it was a very nice and relaxing novel to read with some things level you on the edge of your chair.
