Dune is a story by Frank Herbert about Paul Atreides, a young minor nobility member, and his family’s attempts to solidify their control over the planet Dune. The story combines political intrigue and religious cults. Paul must grapple with both the control of the flow of “spice”, an abilities-enhancing narcotic native to the planet, and his destiny to become “kwisatz haderach”.
Overall, the story is fairly interesting but can get dull in between events. It is a very long read, and the endless conferences that one must sit through, be through Atreides or Harkonnen, can be mind-numbingly uninteresting.
Overall, Herbert combines geopolitics and sci-fi somewhat successfully into an interesting story that could be shortened.
