Dune by Frank Herbert (5/5)

Dune is a 1965 sci-fi novel written by Frank Herbert. It takes place 20,000 years in the future on the desert planet Arrakis otherwise known as Dune. The galaxy is run by a far-reaching empire of which the center-piece is the addictive spice and drug melange, that can only be found on Arrakis. The story starts with the management of Arrakis transferred to the noble house Atreides from their rival house Harkonnens in a secret plot against them. The son of the duke of Atreides is Paul Leto, or Muad’Dib, the supposed prophet the book tells the story of.

The book was great due to its originality, but it definitely felt slow. The book is portraying a theme about colonialism, in a negative way, and it’s also inspired by the idea that a dry wasteland can be turned into a lush Eden-like place for the benefit of everyone. I agree with the negative implications of colonialism and its effects despite the positive effects. Dune is widely known as one of the greatest books written, and I enjoyed it, but I don’t think I did to its fullest extent since I didn’t understand it completely like I could’ve.
