DUNE by Frank Herbert (5/5)

Sophie G.

The book I chose was DUNE. DUNE is a Sci-fi space fantasy book set in the future. It is roughly 20,000 years from now, where humans have taken over different planets. They use the planets as their homes. Paul Aterides is our main character in the story. Paul is on the planet Arrakis, which is wanted for the “spice” or melange that is popular among the rich people for its insatiable abilities to provide longer life and increased consciousness. Leto, Paul’s father, moved away from his home planet Caladan for Arrakis, despite knowing the risks that moving to that planet may bring.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I found that the constant skips between different stories keep it engaging but it did create a bit of struggle to keep up with it. One moment you would be with our protagonist and the next with our villains. The wording in it makes it quite challenging, but it becomes clearer as you read. The world building in DUNE takes a while to understand but it is done incredibly well. The author allows the world to build among itself, certain parts make sense as you read along with the characters and their stories. The world has so many details in it, enough that you could become lost in it. It became more realistic as you read on. On the other hand, the characters are super well developed. You are able to get very attached and truly understand their story as you read. The author is very good at setting the mood in certain moments. He knows how to create tension in specific scenes. Herbert has the incredible ability to make you actually fear or sympathize with a character. He knows how to make a noble protagonist or a terrifying villain. Thanks to this, it really elevates the story.

Overall this book was a fun read. I enjoyed the structure of it and would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Sci - Fi and adventure books. It is truly a world that allows you to get wrapped up into it
