The book Firefight, by Brandon Sanderson, is the second book in The Reckoners series. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Epics started appearing after a red star called Calamity showed up in the sky. Epics are people who have gained or were born with special powers. High epics rule the major cities, and lesser epics work under them, keeping the peace. Epics kill people without thinking and rule without mercy. Epics are very powerful, however each has a unique weakness. High epics can not be killed unless their weakness is discovered and used against them. When an epic uses their powers, they slowly start becoming corrupt. After using a large amount of power at one time, epics become completely corrupt and start killing those closest to them to protect their weakness. A group called the Reckoners tries to kill all the epics to restore peace. David and some of the other Reckoners travel to the city, Babylon Restored, also known as Babylar, to kill Regalia, a high epic in charge of the city. Regelia has the ability to control water and send out projections of herself. She can also use any body of water to look out of and see anywhere that has water. David was hesitant to go to Babylar but decided to because he wanted to find Megan. Megan turned out to be an epic in the last book, and everyone but David thinks she betrayed them. Regalia and Prof were former friends, and Prof believes Regalia wants him to come to Babylar to kill her. Prof is secretly an epic and has been gifting the team his powers. David discovers Prof’s secret but believes that epics can use their powers and not become corrupt if they practice enough. He encourages Prof to practice his abilities and try not to become corrupt after using them, but this practice slowly corrupts Prof. The book ends on a cliffhanger with the Reckoners struggling to win against the epics.
This is one of my favorite book series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Firefight, and I plan to read the next one in the series. The Reckoners shows how too much power can easily corrupt anyone. This would be a really good book for someone looking for a new apocalyptic fiction book to read.
