The book First Person Singular, by Haruki Murakami, is a collection of eight short stories written in a first-person singular narrative as the name of the book might suggest. It was re-published in English on July 18, 2020 by Bungeishunjū. The stories in this book take place in various places across Japan in the 60s and 70s. This book is neither fiction or nonfiction, as the book is about somewhat unbelievable events that take place throughout Murakami’s life. Whether these stories should be believed is up to the reader to decide. These stories include “cream”, “On a stone pillow”, “Charlie Parker Plays Bossa Nova”, “With the Beatles”, “Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey”, “Carnival”, “The Yakult Swallows Poetry Collection”, and finally “First Person Singular”. These stories are very strange and thought provoking. These stories ranged from writing poetry about a frequently-losing baseball team, to discussing relationships with a talking monkey from Shinagawa. This made the book very intriguing and interesting to read, even if it was not packed full of action. In my opinion it was a very good book, and I will definitely look to read more books by Haruki Murakami in the future. I recommend reading this book before bed, or some time when you have a lot of time and a quiet place to think about what the author is trying to convey with these stories.
