Flip by Martyn Bedford (4/5)

“Ever wake up in someone else’s body?” This is the line on the front cover of Flip that really captured my attention, and hopefully, it can do the same for you. Flip is a psychological thriller by Martyn Bedford set in modern-day England where the main character, Alex Gray, wakes up in another boy’s body, who he soon finds out belongs to Philip Garamond. At once, Alex searches for answers, but to no avail; after scouring the internet for others that have experienced the same thing as him, he uncovers a startling truth. Forced to play the part of another boy in another life, Alex is trapped against his own will. This book follows Alex’s journey of denial, disbelief, and acceptance about his situation, and what he is willing to do to return back to his ‘normal’ life. This novel also touches a bit on philosophy and existence, which adds yet another layer to unpack in this multilayered page-turner. I constantly didn’t know what was going to happen next in the story, which made me not want to place this book down when I started reading! The contrast between Alex and Flip’s personalities and how Alex’s decisions were based on his true identity and beliefs was beautifully highlighted. This book had a concrete beginning, middle, and end, and had intriguing characters that enhanced the story even more. The only drawback I did find while reading was the use of colloquial British terms and words that were used about a decade ago, which could be confusing to readers in the present and future. Although this book has interesting characters and fantastic writing, the concept was not groundbreaking. To me, this book served as an enjoyable but simple read that involved some thinking. Ultimately, I recommend this teen/young adult novel to anyone who enjoys reading about sci-fi or thriller novels.
