In the book Flunked by Jen Calonita, Gillian, the main character, and her large family struggle financially. Gillian tries her best to provide enough money for food and necessities for her siblings and parents. However, to ensure that, she steals from the greedy, selfish royals. As a result, she is sent to “Fairy Tale Reform School.” FTRS focuses on changing all of their students’ poor behaviors to positive. At first, Gillian had a lot of hesitation about having to go to the school due to the fact that some of the teachers employed there were former evil queens and even the Big Bad Wolf. She also heard negative things about the reform school which put her on edge. Yet, the main reason that Gillian didn’t want to leave is that she wouldn’t be able to see her siblings for three months. She was also afraid that her family, while she’s gone, would not be able to bring in enough money for the things they needed most. Gillian knew that she had no choice because her parents signed the contract committing to her acceptance. She was forced to attend. While there, she developed strong friendships with Jax, Kayla, Ollie, and Maxine. She also learned that there was more to the school than simply reforming children, such as some evil occurrences.
I don’t read a lot of books for pleasure, yet I didn’t want to put this book down and I am eager to read more! The author made this book funny and incredibly interesting. I love the character relationships and the sequence of events! The plot encouraged me to read more and made me feel as if I was experiencing every exciting adventure with the characters.
If you enjoy reading Harry Potter books, then you should certainly read this book! As I was reading it, I found myself comparing the two series. They have many similarities such as character details and exciting events. However, “Flunked” is different in its own special way with a female main character and a new creative energy. I cannot wait to read all 5 additional books in this series!
