Geese Are Never Swans By Eva Clark (3/5)

In the book “Geese Are Never Swans” written by Eva Clark and created by Kobe Bryant, a teen named Gus and his passion for swimming just like his older brother Danny. The problem with this is Gus does not like living in his older brother's shadow and wants to create his own story and life aside from his brothers. Which is difficult because they have the same passion and dreams. To swim in the Olympics. This seems like an impossible goal for Gus to accomplish because all of the family's funding is going towards Danny and his success while Gus's mother leaves no money to fund his training. For Gus, this causes hatred for his mother and his brother and this hurts him in the long run as they start to lose relationships. Though early in the book Danny tragically takes his own life after failing to make the national swim team which is an important step to swimming in the Olympics. Now Gus fueled by anger rage and hatred for his brother decides to step into the spotlight and fully pursue his dream. The only problem with this is that he needs to be coached by the best coach in the area. Coach Marks. The only problem that Gus has with this is that this was Danny's old coach which causes him sadness, rage, and anger. Throughout the book, Gus is blinded by rage whether it's from his mom or the death of his brother although he has all the talent that you need he struggles at times to forget the sad moments. Through all the hard times and the struggles though, Gus comes out victorious and achieves his goal and surpasses expectations along the way.

My overall opinion of this book is that it is a good book. When I rated this book I gave it a three out of 5 because I was very motivated by it and felt somewhat in touch with the character Gus. But at the same time, there were spots throughout the book where it got "thick" and was hard to read but the key moments were very well written and there were certain parts of the book that I really enjoyed. Overall, my advice to those who read this book is that it is a great read and that although it can get boring at times you should push through those spots because it is worth it in the end.
