In the book, Genuine Fraud, by E. Lockhart, it follows the lives of Jule and Imogen, two teenage girls. Jule is pretending to be someone else, and nobody knows where the real Imogen is. Jule is on the run from the FBI and nobody knows what's true or fake when anything comes out of her mouth. Seemingly best friends, why is Imogen missing while Jule uses her name? Why are none of the details adding up? Told in a mystery, young adult style, this book is told backwards, in a style not seen in many fiction books. Following only two characters, it slowly unfolded itself while you read each chapter, slowly going back in time rather than forward.
Overall, this book was thoroughly confusing. While I have been impressed by other books of E. Lockhart's writing was not enjoyable and too confusing for me to love. Taking on an entirely new writing style, Lockhart writes the entire book backwards, from end of the story to the start. While unique, this style was confusing and didn't have the effect on the book I thought it would. The plot of the book was fine by itself, but this style changed it and made it very boring and confusing. Overall, I was disappointed in the book, having read E. Lockharts, We Were Liars, and absolutely being blown away from it. I believe that this book is missable and not a “must read'' for any Lockhart fans.
Finally, let me discuss the plot. The plot was average at best, and ended on a confusing note with no conclusion. The ending was as confusing as the start and didn't tie it all together like most fiction should. If you asked me what genre the plot was, I still wouldn't know because it followed many different paths and didn't choose just one. It goes to different plot points with little to no explanation and many events go undescribed. Overall, I would not recommend this book to many future readers and would instead recommend one of Lockharts other novels that had a larger effect on me and other readers.
