Girl In Pieces (5/5)

Review: I liked this book a lot, it was very deep and I sympathized with the character on a different level and there were a lot of twists and turns in the book that caught you off guard. There were some parts of the book that were a little much for me but it's still a very good read.

In the book, a girl named Charlotte who's also known as Charlie who's had a hard childhood from the start. Her mother was abusive to her and her father unfortunately committed when she was small. Due to the abuse in her home, Charlie resulted to self harm which she got made fun of for it in school. Charlie meets this girl named Ellis who gets Charlie for who she is and doesn't judge her. After this happens Charlie gets kicked out of her house by her mother. Ellis let her stay at her house until Charlie got kicked out there and relied on the streets. Ellis harms herself because of a breakup with her boyfriend, texts Charlie which she ignores, and the next day Ellis suffers a brain injury and Charlie takes the blame for it. Later, Charlie almost gets raped by a man on the streets before she gets helped by two boys who she would be staying with for a while until they take her to a guys house named Frank. Charlie has to work as a prostitute if she wants drugs. When she refused they locked her in an attic where she attempted suicide. She gets found and taken to the hospital where she learns how to cope with her emotions by art. Charlie gets kicked out early because she doesn't harm herself anymore but when she gets home to her mother, she gives Charlie to her friend named Mikey who she stays with in Tucson. Charlie ends up getting a job washing dishes to pay for rent. Charlie meets a man named Riley who she can relate to since he's had drug problems in the past. She depends on him severely until they get into an argument at Charlie's art show which results in Charlie relapsing on self harm when she sees Riley with another woman. Charlie's cousins take her to their grandfather's house to heal and Charlie ends up finding herself there through her art. She gets offered a job and accepts.

This book was insanely interesting. It felt like you're really in Charlie's life with the way she tells her story. I really like how the book is a call to attention about mental health and how serious stuff can really be. It also talks about family issues and what guilt really is which was interesting.

This book was an amazing read and I recommend it greatly. I don't think you should read if you get sensitive over topics like self harm, prostitution, suicide, drug abuse, and abuse.
