"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K. Rowling (5/5)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone was a very gripping and thrilling book. It’s the first book in the 7 book series, and there’s a movie for each book.

It starts off with Dumbeldore, Hagrid, and Professor McGonagal delivering baby Harry to his new home. His new parents are the Dursleys, and he has a new brother named Dudley. As Harry grows older, the Dursleys treat him with little to no respect. He sleeps under the staircase, a room filled with cobwebs and spiders. Many things started going wrong for Harry, as he accidentally used magic that he didn’t know he had to make his brother fall into a snake enclosure at the zoo. He also started receiving anonymous letters, delivered by owls. They started receiving an abundant amount of these letters, and soon the Dursleys had enough of it. They took a boat to a house on a small uninhabited island, on Harry’s birthday. This is when Hagrid, a giant man, busted through the door in the middle of the night and explained to Harry about Hogwarts, which Harry’s parents told him nothing about. He then took Harry on his flying motorcycle to Diagon Alley, where he was to get his school supplies. At Diagon Alley, almost everyone recognized him. Hagrid explained this was because his parents were killed by the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, and he survived the killing spell from Voldemort. This also killed the physical form of lord Voldemort. This made Harry very well known in the wizarding world, as he was the only wizard to survive a killing spell.

On the train to Hogwarts, Harry meets Ronald Weasely and Hermione Granger, who he very quickly becomes friends with. When they arrived at the school, they were sorted by the sorting hat into different houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were all selected for Gryffindor.

One day, Harry, Ron, and Hermione discovered a mysterious room, where they encountered a three headed dog. They learned that this dog was protecting the sorcerer’s stone, which can grant immortality. They suspect that a teacher at Hogwarts, Snape, is trying to bring Voldemort back into physical form to make him immortal. After doing research, Harry, Ron, and Hermione get past the three headed dog, and other obstacles after. Harry gets separated from Ron and Hermione along the way. Harry, by himself, finds that an unsuspected professor is trying to bring Voldemort back, Professor Quirrell. They fight, and Harry ends up killing him with his touch, due to a love based protection from Voldemort, given by his mom. The sorcerer’s stone was then destroyed.

I thought that this book was an amazing read. It left me sitting on the edge of my seat by the end of each chapter. I really felt like I could connect with Harry and his thoughts and actions. I think the whole idea of the book was very interesting, and there’s no other book quite like it. I also love how it’s a series, because you get to continue the adventure. I would totally recommend this book to any other reader, regardless of whether they’re experienced in reading or a beginner, because this book is able to draw you in and make you want to stay up all night reading it.
