My older brothers recommended that I read Hatchet, and I just got around to it. This realistic fiction novel by Gary Paulsen is about teenager Brian Robertson whose parents recently divorced, on his flight to his dad's house, his plane crashes in a forest leaving the piolet dead, Brian uses his hatchet from his mom to survive in the harsh, unforgiving environment he was forced into. This book is definitely in my top ten books I have read! Every time I read this book I felt like I was transferred into Brian's mind and body. I think this book is so enjoyable for me because the main character is also a teenager and I have always thought about myself trying to survive on my own in the wilderness. After reading this book, my fantasy to go into the woods and make my own shelter and food has been suppressed. I believe that if someone wanted to survive in the wilderness they would need lots of mental strength that I don't have. I like the end of the book because brian explains how his time in the wild affected his life after he was saved. I also enjoyed how most of the major events in this book are very unpredictable and the author always kept me on my toes. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be trapped in the wilderness with nothing but yourself. I think the author should have put more information about Brian's life after he was rescued because I believe that It would change a person a lot more than described in the book. Also, I wish the author was more descriptive at times to really understand what is happening and the severity of what was happening. I also would have hoped that we got more information about his parent's divorce. If I were to read this book again, I would read in a more quiet area or put on forest sounds in my headphones to really feel the vibe of the book. I would highly recommend that you read Hatchet.
