The book Hawkes Harbor by S. E. Hinton is about the story of Jaime Sommers, an orphan whose life has not been the easiest. Jaime has had a lot of brutal things happen to him, including losing both of his parents at a young age, his ship being raided by pirates, and getting attacked by a shark. Jaime worked out at sea all of his life and has traveled around the world with his friend Kell. During his travels, he landed in Hawkes Harbor and met Grenville Hawkes. Mr. Hawkes was one of the most well known people in town. Shortly after Jaime Sommers stumbled into him, he became Mr. Hawkes personal assistant. Throughout the book, Mr. Hawkes treats Jaime as an object and not as a human being. This psychological fiction book helps display the long lasting effects of abuse. Jaime was psychologically abused by this powerful man. Mr. Hawkes constantly degraded Jamie in the tasks that he made him perform. All of the past traumatic events that had happened to Jaime started to drive him insane. His insanity landed him into an asylum, where he is heavily medicated and treated with therapy sessions. Will his time in the asylum help him escape his demons? This book was an entertaining read. The author creates suspense throughout the chapters by describing in detail mysterious events. The unexpected twists and turns pushed me to the edge of my seat. I liked how S. E. Hinton created a fictional story to display a serious problem in the world today. Many authors do this with modern day issues, and I believe it is a good way to express such a serious matter. This book helped me understand the effects of abuse on a victim. I now have a deeper understanding of how victims of abuse can deal with mental struggles for the rest of their lives. I thought this was a good read, but not the best book I have ever read. I enjoyed this book, however, the seriousness of the story was a little hard to take at times. I think that this book would be better suited for people of an older age. I would recommend this book to people who like psychological and fantasy readings.
