Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (4/5)

Heartstopper takes place in the UK and follows the story of Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson. Charlie is the only open gay kid in his all boys school. He was bullied at the beginning but now he has become quite popular. When year 11 student Ben finds out about Charlie being gay he takes advantage of him. Charlie doesn't like to spend time with Ben, so by first bell he is already out the door. When Charlie gets his new class groups he is sat next to year 11 student Nick Nelson. Nick is on the rugby team and is considered a “rugby lad”. Charlie is told he shouldn't be friends with Nick, but he still remains friends with him. Over time they start to get closer and closer, Charlie even agrees to join the rugby team. One day Ben texts Charlie to meet up like they usually do but this time Charlie plans to tell him he doesn't want to meet up anymore. Nick starts to get suspicious that something is going on and follows Charlie. After Charlie tells Ben he doesn't want to meet up anymore Ben starts to get aggressive, and just then Nick comes in and saves Charlie. Charlie had started developing a crush for Nick, but since he assumed Nick was straight, he thought he never had a chance. After this incident Nick feels different about himself so he starts googling all these questions he has about himself. Nick and Charlie start to hang out more with each other in and after school. After they won their rugby game the rest of the team start to question if they are just friends or dating. They both decide to go to a classmate's birthday party, and at this party Nick is forced to leave Charlie and talk to his old crush (who is also gay now). This makes Charlie feel awful for actually thinking he had a chance with Nick, but after Nick finds Charlie to reassure him that they are just friends and that he actually might like guys. Charlie is extremely happy to hear this but right after Nick gets up to go take care of something. Charlie thinks that he doesn't like him so he leaves the party extremely upset. Nick returns to the spot where they were only to find Charlie missing.

I thought this book was good, it wasn’t my favorite but I will read the rest of the series. It was something fun to read with a very good message behind it so I did enjoy it.

This book was something I think young people should read because it shows how some people are forced to live. It is a good book for people who might be curious about their sexuality.
