Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (4/5)

Volume 2 begins the same night as the ending of volume 1. Nick is thinking of texting Charlie after the unfortunate events of what happened when Nick walked away from charlie. After this night Charlie got 2 hours of sleep and was very out of it, Charlie’s mom asked him to answer the door and it was Nick standing in the rain. Nick thought it would be better if they talked in person instead of texting Charlie. Nick tries to explain what happened, but Charlie quickly interrupts him and tells him he regrets what happened last night. Nick reassures him by saying he wasn’t trying to send mixed signals, he explained how the reason he ran away was because he was having a “gay-crisis” and he was confused. On wednesday while they were playing rugby Charlie gets hurt and Nick rushes over to his side, Nick realizes that he is hurt and takes him to get an ice-pack. Nick's friends start to realize something fishy is going on between Nick and Charlie, but the coach quickly shuts it down. Charlie invites Nick to his birthday party with all his other friends at a bowling alley. Everyone seems to really like Nick except Tao who is afraid Nick is with Charlie for the wrong reason. Tao confronts Charlie about his suspicions in the bathroom, not aware Nick is listening. Charlie gets really upset at Tao for accusing Nick of something like that, but because Nick is not comfortable yet he has to pretend like they are just friends. Nick finds Charlie after he comes out of the bathroom to hug him and tell him how amazing he is. A few weeks later while they are in rehearsals for the spring concert their orchestra usually does a combined performance with the all girls school. Nick runs into his ex-girlfriend Tara and she is the first person he has told that he is gay, Nick says how it felt good to get that off his chest. Nick invites Charlie to his birthday party at a movie theater, Nick's friends are not happy Charlie has been invited as well. After the movie Nick's friends start to tease Charlie and Nick is not happy so he punches one of his friends right in the nose. The next day they go to the beach together where Nick finally gets the courage to say how he is dating Charlie and he is happy the world now knows.

I thought this book was okay compared to the first one. It wasn't as good, there wasn't a huge conflict and it felt like everything that happened could have been sized down into 2-3 chapters. I felt like it was unnecessary to make it a whole book. I

I thought this book had a good message and is I think important for people to be educated about. I thought it was a quick read and is good to read when bored or when you cannot sleep.
