IT by Stephen King takes place in the mid eighties and entails the adventures of seven adolescents in a town called Derry. They discover an evil shape-changing entity that they call "It" who lives in the sewer and preys on scared children to feed on every twenty-seven years. The entity, soon to be discovered as Pennywise, thee Clown, transforms into terrifying creatures specific to the child he preys on. Bill, one of the seven children, loses his brother to this monster and when the other six children encounter Pennywise they decide to kill it. They work together to take down Pennywise in the center of the underground sewage system. They defeat Pennywise and swear to come back to Derry to defeat it it if ever returns. 27 years later Pennywise returns and preys on small, unsupervised children. Mike, one of the children stayed and grew up in Derry and started to notice the missing children. The "Losers" club return to Derry and they reunite with their pasts and discover Pennywise's origin to understand what they are truly dealing with and how to destroy it. They fail to defeat him and lose one of their friends in the process. Their leader Bill yells at it and belittles it, until the rest of them join in to make him small so they can rip his heart out and defeat him once and for all. The theme of this book is that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. The book was chilling but also hilarious. Stephen King's words make the reader wonder where he gets these dark thoughts and terrifying ideas. The story had so many twists and flashbacks that helped the reader better understand the characters. IT inspired me to look into more of Stephen Kings books to see if they had the same thrill and excitement. I would rate this a five-one of the best books I have ever read due to it's chilling connection to the reader.
IT by Stephen King (5/5)
