It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover (4/5)

The book “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover is a classic romance story. Throughout the book, the reader may learn the importance of believing in yourself in any situation you may be in. Such as when Lily opens up a floral shop with her best friend. It addresses abusive relationships in a way that is realistic through the use of Lily, who came from an abusive relationship with her husband. Lastly, the book talks about toxic masculinity. Though, it is based on this love triangle between Lily, the main character, and her two love interests. Her husband and her first love. Begins to cause much conflict throughout the story. As the reader, I found the book to be interesting the reason for these circumstances is when talking about abusive relationships one may believe it is easy to leave them but this book explains and demonstrates the depth of the struggles of being in one. Learning to realize why Lily’s mother stayed with her husband for all these years. I truly like how the author gave Lily a background story that gave the character sense of independence and confidence by living the way she is. With that being said, the character's type of personality brings suspense to the table when the two lovers begin to argue about if the relationship will work out. Additionally, one may be inspired to believe in themselves and open their own business just like in Lily’s case. The author believes in ending violence which as a reader I must relate to. Ending violence is important in modern day society. Colleen Hoover lived the life of Lily. Grew up in a cruel, abusive household having to witness her mother being tackled down by her father at a young age. However, the book poorly covers the topic of learning to move on. Lily continues to stay in touch with her first love while married which could contradict the purpose of the book. The purpose was to avoid an abusive life but at the end of the day, Lily’s husband hit her irrationally out of anger for not moving on from her first love but this also doesn’t mean that hitting someone is okay. Therefore, I believe this book should be read if one is interested in dramatic, intense romance books.
