Jorge Joestar by Ōtarō Maijō (5/5)

Jorge Joestar, by Ōtarō Maijō, is a bizarre but enjoyable read. The odd-numbered chapters tell the story of Jorge Joestar, a boy raised in La Palma in the 1900s. It shows his life story as well as Lisa Lisa’s, his future fiance. As a child, he was often bullied by Antonio Torres and his group of friends with Lisa Lisa having to save him. He meets a Japanese detective, Tsukumojuku, who mysteriously vanishes off the coast of Florida, and then Penelope De La Rosa, a girl with a mysterious power to create a locked room around anybody. She first has trouble controlling it, but after moving in with Jorge, she begins to learn how to control it. Later on, Lisa Lisa moves away to become a warrior with a family friend during which Jorge and Penelope move to England. Jorge meets new friends like Kenton and Steven Motorize, and later gets framed for Kenton's murder. Steven also has a unique ability, which is to grow wings. Jorge learns of his ability, Beyond. He can change his fate, as long as he believes in Beyond. He becomes a pilot in the RAF and fights off a zombie invasion during his wedding with Lisa Lisa.

The even-numbered chapters are about Jorge Joestar (Joji Joesuta), a Japanese kid detective adopted by the Joestar family 36 universal resets later in the 21st century. He comes across a boy named Tsukumojuku, who has somehow traveled between universes. He is found dead in Morioh, presumably by Kira Yoshikage, and Jorge goes to investigate. He discovers stands, the physical manifestation of one’s willpower and spirit. The city then splits off from the mainland and collides with Nero Nero island, home of an Italian gang known as the Passione Family. He meets Giorno Giovanna, Rohan Kishibe, and others during his investigation. He goes to space using his Beyond and meets Kars, the ultimate being, along with 36 parallel versions of him fused into a giant eyed balloon held by the original. The Kars from the first universe then accompanies him back to earth, where he meets the original Jorge and battles Dio Brando, as Dio aspires to become the secret emperor of the world. In the end, both Jorges return to their universes. However, Penelope chooses to stay in the 37th universe, where she has a daughter with Jorge’s adoptive father, naming her Joeko Joestar.

I enjoyed the book, it had detailed explanations about things that may not have been clear at first and a diverse but connected plot that satisfies the reader at the ending. It builds up a lot of sympathy for the characters and has many surprises while not seeming like it is throwing things in your face all the time. It is the perfect fusion between a detective novel and an adventure.

In all, I rate this book 5 out of 5, although if you plan on reading this book you should prepare yourself for some bizarre things.
