Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger (4/5)

Keeper of the Lost Cities” by Shannon Messenger is a captivating read into a world in the eyes of Sophie Foster. Sophie Foster is a unique child who finds out she is anything but ordinary. Sophie Foster started out as a normal girl but suddenly she had found herself in an accident and woke up with new powers. With her telepathic abilities and her new home in the Lost Cities, Sophie has now had to go on a journey of self discovery to find herself now with her new powers. This novel has many themes but identity and belonging stands out the most. Sophie struggles with feeling out of place, at first in her human life and now in this new world.  This is a relatable struggle that we all face which is the search for your true self while being crushed with society's pressures. Throughout the novel readers are shown to think of their own paths to embrace who they truly are. Shannon Messenger also weaves into deeper issues, such as discrimination and inclusivity. The Lost Cities have tensions just as the real world between different magical species. Through Sophie’s lens, we can see how fear and misunderstanding can divide groups of people. “The Keeper of the Lost Cities” was truly an experience. This book is beautifully written with the imagination of Shannon Messenger. Messenger managed to make this book not only immersive but entrancing to make you dive deeper into the story with each chapter. I recommend this book to any age as it is not only appropriate for younger kids but also can be relatable for teenagers as well. In essence, “Keeper of the Lost Cities” is more than a fantasy novel; it’s a heartfelt exportation into what it means, and the experience of finding your place in the world. Messenger crafts a story that is entertaining, and is encouraging the readers to reflect on their own journeys. This book is a wonderful read for anyone who has ever struggled to fit in. It reminds us that our unique journeys make us special and embracing them can lead to a better life-both in fiction and in life.
