June Iparis is a 15-year-old, young prodigy of the Republic of America. One of the nations that rose up after the fall of the United States. She is the only person to ever achieve 1500, a perfect score, on her trial used to determine your role in society. She and her brother, Metias don’t quite see eye to eye with her causing too much trouble.
Day is more than just a common criminal, wanted by the government for several different reasons like arson and destruction of military property. No one seems to be sure of what he looks like and his family thinks he is dead, except for his brother John. As far as they know he was sent off somewhere else after failing his trial when really you are killed or experimented on before dying. Somehow, he made it out alive and has his friend, Tess by his side too. While waiting to give John supplies for their family, their house is marked with a different X for the plague than normal. Desperate to get them the cure, he attempts to rob a hospital to steal them, but they don’t have any left when he reaches them. He triggered an alarm and is chased by a soldier hitting him in the shoulder with a knife before barely getting away, but still injured.
June is surprised after saying goodbye to her brother before he goes on a late assignment, to be woken up by Thomas, another soldier, and subordinate of Metias who she knows pretty well. He tells her she has been ordered by Metias’ Commander, Jameson to go to the hospital where Metias was working. Thomas eventually reveals Metias has been killed and is recruited by Commander Jameson. They analyze the scene and are able to connect it to another crime and now know Day attacked the hospital. They believe Day is Metias’ killer, but the only thing is while Day has a long list of crimes he has never killed or severely injured anyone, so why now?.
I thought this was a really good book with a couple of exciting twists and turns. I enjoyed the characters and being able to get both their points of view in the book. This is part of a series and the other books are just about as amazing as the first.
