Let the Storm Break is the second book in the Sky Fall series written by bestselling author Shannon Messenger. It is a sequel to Let the Sky Fall which is about a boy named Vane Weston, who has no memories of his childhood, and his guardian, Audra. They are air elementals and can use their powers to control the wind, but the enemy wants their gift and plans to learn it from them. Audra trains Vane to use the wind as a weapon to fight the enemy, and along the way, Vane’s memories return and reveal a new language of the wind. During their training, they fall in love which ends up only hurting them in the final battle and causing the enemy to have the advantage.
Let the Storm Break is a romantic fantasy and young adult novel where the two lovers find their way back to each other after being separated by the enemy. Throughout the book, they encounter many difficulties with keeping their powers from the enemy, sacrificing many people along the way and challenging the strength of their relationship and their seemingly unbreakable bond. As they fight the enemy using the wind as a weapon, they are forced to rely on the ones who betrayed them countless times before, risking their relationship and the world to obliterate the storms sent to destroy them.
The novel was a bit slow at the start with every chapter being the same story of the characters trying to reunite, but the middle and end were filled with plot twists which made up for the tedious beginning. In the middle of the book, Audra discovers a secret Vane has been hiding from her which picks the book up and creates drama between the characters throughout the rest of the novel. It is incredibly well written and has a similar feel to the bestselling Keeper of the Lost Cities Series, also written by Shannon Messenger. Overall, Let the Storm Break was a quick but intriguing read and I would recommend this novel to fantasy and romance lovers because it is engaging and has a perfect mix of romance, drama, and magic.
