“The brightness was momentarily blocked as a huge form stepped out, its scaled outline backlit by blood-red light.”
This little clip was taken from Lydia Sherrer’s Love, Lies, & Hocus Pocus: Revelations, the second installation of the Love, Lies, & Hocus Pocus series. The series takes place in a world of magic, where witches and wizards, and even demons and angels exist. The series follows the adventures of an unlikely duo, a wizard named Lily and Sebastian the witch as they get caught up in many misadventures. This is the second book in the series and it is essential to read the first book before this because it continues off of the first.
This story starts off with an unprecedented incident where Lily’s cat, Sir Kipling gains a new power through a mysterious clay fragment. To add more stress onto Lily’s plate, Sebastion, her witch friend notifies her of an upcoming robbery of an immensely powerful magical item, an ancient tablet. To counter this, Lily and Sebastian make a plan to stop the heist and confront the thief and it seemed like they were getting the upper hand. Suddenly, the thief makes a drastic decision and calls upon magical help for the heist, but when all seemed lost, Sebastion with his newfound but mysterious powers holds the being back and they end up successful. After this event, Lily gets invited to learn about her past and the truth, something she has been searching for her whole life. She later finds out and meets with her family and is happy for a while, until, she realizes the dark secrets her family holds. After a near-death experience, she escapes her family’s estate with the help of her friends and returns back home, safe and sound.
This book surprised me because I believed it was just going to be ample read but once I started reading, I started to love the book. The vivid language used to create imagery makes you immersed in the story, making you feel like you are inside the book. Also, as soon as you think it's going to get boring, the author throws an unexpected twist at you that always keeps you on your toes. In this story, the reader can really connect to Lily as she experiences jealousy and heartbreak which makes you get attached to her. Sebastian’s character is also portrayed perfectly as you see his mindset of desperation and the want to protect those dear to him, making you fall in love with him and his cheesy sense of humor. The writing flowed smoothly throughout the book but the same thing can’t be said for the story itself. The story was amazing but there would be some parts that seem underwhelming or cut too short, especially in the climax, but the majority of the story didn't have this problem.
Overall, this read was amazing and contained smooth and vivid language, lovable characters, and a story that always makes you come back for more. Although, some parts of the story were underperformed but the majority of the plot was fantastic. I would definitely recommend this book to all fantasy lovers as it portrays the world of magic perfectly. I gave this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars and I can’t wait to read the next installment.
