James Dashner tells the heart wrenching story of The Maze Runner in great detail, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. At the start, a boy is awoken in fear to a clanging metal elevator with no memory at all. Once arrived at his destination, he is faced with the abrupt reality of what was set in front of him. There was green for miles and a good deal of boys just like him staring down upon the elevator. With time he is briefed on the situation that they have all been sent here, with no warning, no context, and of course, no memory. All he can remember is his name, and even that came with time. The luscious space seems like a paradise until he sets his eyes on the looming walls surrounding ¨The Glade.¨ He has met a variety of characters, some a lot friendlier than others. A crazy amount of unrecognizable slang being thrown around suddenly because overwhelming to Thoms. He can remember where he is, or who, but he knows… he wants to be a runner. He is presented with frightening sights all leading back to the maze but more than anything it calls to him. Suddenly, with an entire glade of boys, an unexpected visitor shows up… it's a girl. This raises suspicions leading to Thomas throughout the novel when he realizes he could be connected to her. Out of the blue, ¨Teresa.¨ A name pops into his head, having no clue what it could possibly mean. Through all of the conflict Thomas prevails, the boys split, some taking Thomas as their leader to search for a way out. Emotions scattered across the floor as they are pained with knowing the monsters that lay behind them. Finally, the door, all of their painstakingly hard work looks to be rewarded… or so it seems. Personally, I really loved this book. I have never been drawn to books as much as I have with this one. It kept my heart racing as I had the same emotions as the characters throughout the novel. It felt like a real bond had been made and was a great read. I really loved how the roles of the gladers were shown and how Dashner described everything in perfect detail made me feel like I was there. Using imagination, one can have a really great time making this book a little movie in your head. I would say to take your time and really envision what is happening because it is really rewarding to experience it that way.
