Monster by Walter Dean Myers (5/5)

Ryan L.

The book “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers is a fantastic book based around young adults facing major legal troubles. The theme of this book is identity. Steve Harmon, the main character in the book, faces a court case centered on a murder during a robbery. The legal situation that takes place in this book could change the rest of these people’s lives without any going back. It is told in a movie-like way where the author gives visions of scenes and shots for a movie. The strategy used to tell the story requires talent and creativity by the author. You go deep into the mind of Steve Harmon and learn a lot about how the case affects him.It is a challenging case mentally as depicted in the book and gives an insight into the mind of a young man dealing with a huge dilemma. There’s no telling where the outcome is going throughout the book making it exciting the whole time.

I thought the book was absolutely amazing. I learned a lot about court roles too! I loved the unique storytelling format and the realistic feeling the author produced. It made it stand out over any other book I’ve read and gave it a fresh creative feeling. Also, the in-depth details of the characters are cinematic and entertaining. The author did a great job by keeping the story exciting and engaging. Never a dull moment in this book which is important for a legally involved plot. The constant controversy adds very well to the story. The way in which the emotions and thoughts involved are portrayed make a connection to the reader in a special way that makes it different from any other book.

Monster is an interesting book that will appeal to many people. My advice for future readers is to make sure to keep track of the names and roles of different people involved. This will make it more understandable and easier to read. Ensure to really take the time to put yourself in the people's shoes in the book and get a grip of how emotions and thoughts are affecting the outcome. This will make the book fascinating. You won’t regret reading this book as it takes you on a roller coaster ride of events and circumstances that are represented in an original manner.
