My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh (3/5)

The main character doesn’t know what to do with herself. She’s a graduate from Columbia University, a good job in Downtown New York, a boyfriend who seems to care enough about her, and a best friend that doesn’t want to leave her side. She has a good life, right? That’s how she wants to feel. She wants to feel like she has a good life, but something in her just makes her feel so unmotivated. Every day is starting to blend together after she graduated. Her boss takes a toll on her with how much work she gives the main character, her “boyfriend” only comes back to her when he wants to, and her best friend is self centered. She’s so tired of this repetitive and predictable life. Physically tired and mentally tired. She’s so tired, she solicits the help of a strange physiatrist who she lies to in order to get prescription pills to help with her “insomnia.” For the next year, she continues to lie to her doctor and asks for stronger drugs to put her to sleep for longer. This book does a really good job of keeping you engaged. Even without a clear plot, you find yourself wondering what our main character gets herself involved with. Personally, this was the only thing that kept me interested. I thought the book was overall boring since each page you are wondering what will happen next but nothing ever really happens next. Not only that, but the main character herself isn’t very likeable. She’s rude to everyone and acts entitled to everything. There’s only a big shift in something when it’s the end of the book, and then finally something actually happens at the end. In my opinion, it took too long to actually reach that point. It’s an okay book, and at least I was kept entertained until the end.
