This book is not for children. The story takes place in 1909-1948 and has some immature themes so I would not recommend this book for kids under 12. It is a sad story about a man, Oba Yozo, who struggles to understand humans and his own humanity. It follows his life from childhood-adulthood showing his need to mask his emotions threw humor and how once he reached adulthood he became suicidal and an alcoholic. This book was meant to be a semi-autobiography but has never been confirmed to be because the author killed himself after writing it. I first started reading this book on a trip to Colorado to visit my cousins and in my downtime, I would read this book for fun. It's one of those books that's lowkey disturbing but very alluring at the same time. I personally like the story and the ideas the main character discusses, it is very interesting. If you would like to read this book because you’ve heard good things about the author (or you're a bungo stray dogs fan, I see you) I totally recommend reading it. It is pretty depressing but very entertaining. If you are a BSD fan and are just reading this to understand more about Dazai, it really won’t help since it is only sort of about the author but I can totally see the bandage man relating to this book. Also, it gets fruity sometimes. Overall, 8/10, and recommend it if you are into these kinds of books. If you don't like depressing but relatable stories then don't read it and No Longer Human also has a comic adaptation and a movie if pictures are more your style.
