One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus (3/5)

In the book One of Us Is Lying, there were five highschool students whose reputation all lied on one secret, a secret that one of these five students knew. The five students were all framed that they had their phones in class and were sent to detention. In the middle of detention the teacher saw a car had crashed. The teacher left the room to check and when the teacher was gone the student who knew their secrets, Simon drank a glass of water. Seconds later he was choking and the student, Nate says it was from a peanut allergy and when the student, Cooper tries to find epipens in the nurses he realizes they are all gone. The two girls, Addy and Bronwyn, call 911 and soon the ambulance is there. When they all get home they are shocked and scared. Soon after each of their home situations are revealed. Nate’s Mother died when he was young and he left with his alcoholic dad. Since Nate had nothing else to make money he resorted to drug deals and is on probation for drug dealing in the past. Cooper is a football town star and many colleges have their eye on him for scholarships. Bronwyn is a studious girl who needs to work twice as hard as any other person because her sister has Cancer and can not go to school. Addy has a complicated home life with a loving sister but judgemental mother, Addy has a boyfriend who she loves dearly but later in the novel it is revealed that he is controlling of her. The characters grow as the novel goes on and are suspected by the police of Simon's murder when they find out that the student Simon was going to post a high cost secret of theirs to a gossip app he owns that had gained him many enemies. The police are wondering if it would be them because of the secrets that were about to be spilled to the whole school and ruin relationships and reputations or another enemy of his. The police show the students what he was about to post about them and their secrets start to spill around the school and the students are struggling to stay out of trouble with the police and figure out how to fix their reputation. Throughout this book I felt like I was experiencing what the characters were feeling in the moment and that I was going on the journey with them. My opinions about characters shifted throughout the story and taught me that people are not always what they seem. I felt that I could relate to some of the things the characters in the book were going through and accurately demonstrated the feelings of a teenager with their family and the pressure of people who they think are their friends. It shows the emotions and weird feelings in love and provides the reader with a deeper understanding of the differences in people's situations and gives you empathy for everyone and makes you feel seen in your own mentality. This book is great for someone who is looking for a book filled with drama and emotions and gets you thinking about the situations of the people in the book and guessing who the murderer may be.
