One of us is Lying by Karen M. McManus (4/5)

This was a pretty good read in my opinion, definitely one of the better books I have read recently. The story starts with a group of highschoolers in detention, and one of them gets murdered. The question though, who? We get to follow a handful of the witnesses in their day-to-day lives, and how this murder made an impact into their lives. It keeps you guessing at every turn, and the ending of the story is nothing you could even guess. I was very shocked to read the ending, and I can’t wait to soon read the next book. The reason I didn’t rate this book 5/5 was because I felt that while it was a very good book for anyone (probably a highschooler though), I didn’t think of it as groundbreaking. Something I might’ve put as groundbreaking would maybe be the first Hunger Games book, but that’s my opinion. Other than that, I really did like this book, and lucky for me there are 2 more books in this series, so luckily the series can continue and we can learn more about the characters. Another nice thing about this book is that it is not all about the murder, and just a bunch of “who did it” chapters. It actually goes in depth with each witnesses’ life, and how they can try to get through the schoolyear while all being seemed as suspicious. It can really reflect onto the average highschooler’s life, like having to deal with school and afterschool activities, relationships, and other topics that are shown in the story. On top of that, the way the story integrates side characters makes them seem actually more like main characters, but we never get to see their personal view, so while they are a part of story, they don’t get their own chapters. And that is another thing about One of us is Lying, is that each chapter consists of short slices into the main character’s lives, even with the day and time it happened, so you get to be a detective and possibly try using them to figure things out. I only thought of doing that while writing this report, so I can’t really say if it helps you figure out the mystery. For future readers, just note that this story is very easy and it keeps you guessing.

TLDR: Murder mystery about highschoolers and is very good because of writing style and ending.
