One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus (5/5)

The book, One of Us Is Lying was an excellent book that is filled with suspense and leaves you wanting to read more of it. The constant changes in the plot and wondering who did what made me want to get down to the end. The author, Karen did a wonderful job with tying family relationships and friendships into this story creating more of a mystery. An example of that is when Bronwyn’s parents are asked to question her about the killing by the police and they refuse, later finding out that she made a post on social media that could make her seem very quilty. Also, adding romantic relationships into this book with Bronwyn, the smartest in her grade with offers from Ivy League colleges and Nate, a felon and drug dealer falling madly in love with one another. Each aspect of this book was very creative in involving regular high school kids with hopes and dreams into this disaster which made them question themselves and everyone around them. Karen amazingly presented foreshadowing in this book and hinted at something in every scenario. Bronwyn being an academic scholar, Addy being a cheerleader, Cooper being a star baseball player, and much more. This situation brought all of these kids together in unimaginable ways and put them in situations that changed their lives. I disliked the way that the book ended in Simon's death supposedly being a suicide when everyone's life changed for the worst and an entire investigation took place for no reason. However, I do see the logic in ending this book with a suicide because each reader had different suspicions and opinions and this gave us an answer that most wouldn't suspect. I personally suspected Nate as the killer towards the beginning of the book because he was a criminal and was dealt the worst cards out of the three other suspects. He was only one of the few people I had suspicions of though. Everyone in this story left me with questions. Overall, I really enjoyed the intense mystery this book brought and thought it was great!
