Out of My Mind By Sharon M. Draper 4/5

New York Times bestselling author, Sharon M. Draper wrote the fictional book Out of My Mind originally published on March 9, 2010. Out of My Mind is part of a sequel with the second book being Out of My Heart. Out of My Mind is based on an eleven year old girl, Melody Brooks, who was born with cerebral palsy, a disorder that is due to abnormal brain development. This affects her ability to move, speak, eat, drink, and complete day to day tasks on her own. Even though growing up with disabilities is extremely difficult for both Melody and her family, her parents still did everything in their power to give her the “normal” life she always wished she had. While Melody still went to school, participated in educational contests, and did fun activities outside of school she had a caretaker, Mrs. V, that would help her live her daily life. For a middle school girl, it’s hard to see girls the same age have a bunch of friends that are able to speak and not have to worry about anything besides having fun. While Melody learned to live with her disability she had a very rough time adjusting to not having a large amount of friends and the way people judged and treated her. The strong depth in the emotion Melody felt helped me put myself in her shoes to get an idea of how she really felt. Everything that happened leading up to the ending made the story one that a reader never wants to finish. The only thing that could’ve been different is how the story ended. It felt very sudden or in a sense very random because nothing really led up for that exact situation to happen. This book was very memorable because it really showed what people young and old with disabilities such as cerebral palsy may experience. Out of My Mind is a great example of the endless possibilities anyone could have even with major bumps in the road. Out of My Mind provides a deeper connection to the reader to almost have a feel for the character as if a loved one is going through the same situation. Out of My Mind would be a good book for anyone who is interested in sad stories that have a very realistic plot. I personally enjoyed this book because it feels like a documentary and we are just reading how Melody lives her life with our own idea of what each situation looks like.
