The truth will set you free. Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay is a young-adult fiction novel based on current events in the Philippines. The story follows main character Jay Reguero, a Filipino-American living in the US with his immediate family. His senior year of high school, Jay finds out his favorite cousin, Jun, was murdered in President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs.” Duterte and the Philippine National Police are responsible for over 12,000 deaths from 2016 - 2022. They killed anyone suspected of possessing or using drugs without any real evidence. Jay returns to the Philippines to investigate what really happened and to find justice for Jun. I enjoyed reading this book but it was not one of my favorites. The beginning was slow and the characters were confusing at first. The plot was also very misleading for how the book ended. I would probably not recommend this book to anyone because although it was good, I think there are so many other books that have a more exciting plot and more interesting characters.
