Sara Pennypacker is a New York Times bestselling American author who writes and illustrates the theme of friendships, loyalty, and the impact of the choices we make. Similar to some of Sara’s other well-known books, the book Pax emphasizes the importance of friendship and how loyalty in a friendship is crucial because it helps build support for one another. In the book Pax, a little boy named Peter is forced to separate from his closest and best friend, Pax, who is a fox. Ever since Pax had been rescued by Peter as a kit, they have been inseparable and have shared precious memories together. Unfortunately, when Peter’s dad is enlisted in joining the military, Peter is forced to release Pax back into the wild. It does not take long for Peter to then soon release he can not live without Pax’s companionship. Throughout the book, we get a different perspective of both Peter and Pax as they share the many long adventures and friends made along the way to finding one another again. I thought the book Pax was very sincere and conveyed the strong friendships that are held between a human and their pet. I have a pet myself, and I was able to relate to the strong friendship that Peter has with Pax. Many people can also agree that they have the same bond with their pet that Peter had with Pax. This relation is because both the owner and their pet are loyal and dedicated to being there for each other. There is so much to love about this meaningful and thoughtful book because of the connection that is shared between Peter and Pax. I also enjoyed reading the different points of view because it helped me understand the hardships and feelings they faced when trying to find one another. I rated this book a four out of five because it is very heartfelt and is a fun read for animal lovers, although I wish the ending had been explained more in detail as it had been very vague and random. Thanks to this book, I realized that it is important to appreciate the relationship and time that you have with your pet.
