Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lighting Thief by Rick Riordan(3/5)

”Percy Jackson The Lighting Thief” is a fiction book, by Rick Riordan following Percy Jackson. Percy is a boy who starts questioning who he is after a weird encounter with a teacher and many other unexplainable incidents. Percy finds out he is a “half-blood” meaning he is a child of the gods. He later finds out his dad is Posiden the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. Grover and Annabeth are characters who help Percy on an adventure to retrieve Zeus's lightning bolt from Hades who resides in the underworld and also so that Percy can find his mother. Together they travel from Camp Half-Blood to Los Angeles and meet Ares, the god of war, who gives them a backpack. As they reach the underworld they find out Hades did not take the Lightning bolt and Hades had something stolen from him as well. Zeus’s lightning bolt is found in Percy’s bag. It's revealed Ares set Percy and his friend up so Percy fights Ares and wins returning both the missing items to Hades and Zeus. In return, hades bring back Percy's mom. Percy Jackson gets betrayed at the end by his friend Luke who is being controlled by Cronos who is the father of all the gods. He is revealed to be the reason all the events have unfolded leaving the book on a cliffhanger.

I enjoyed reading this book because of the relationship dynamic between Grover, Annabeth, and Percy. Throughout the book, we see how Grover and Percy grow through challenges from school to the underworld. The same can be said about Annabeth. Her relationship with Percy in the beginning is more reserved and slightly annoyed. Despite this during their journey they share many heartfelt moments and character development and so does the whole group together. This is shown when they all offer to sacrifice themselves for each other in the underworld. I was also very intrigued by the prophecies that the skeleton told because it kept me intrigued by the prophecies that were going to come. Issues with the book are the author making the exposition/setup as long as it was because the setup took almost half of the book. Another issue is that the prophecies were very underwhelming with almost no effect on the storyline or plot of the book.

Percy Jackson's resolution is also very fast and underwhelming. In comparison to “Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone” by Jk Rowling where the actions leading up to the end matter much more. The ending of this book may make readers feel uncertain about what they read and missing plot holes took away from the amazing experience from readers. In conclusion, this book is a very fun read and has amazing elements to it overall.
