Ready Player One by Ernest Cline 4/5

Ready Player One, written by Ernest Cline in 2011 was an excellent read. The fictional novel describes an American city in the year 2045. The natural world is crumbling and the Earth is falling apart as a lost cause. People live in cramped cities, struggle for money, and many have turned towards drugs to escape from this world. A man named James Halliday had created a very cheap online life that is available to anyone. He named it OASIS and it became an escape for many people. After Halliday’s death, he left behind a quest where people could search the world for three keys and gates to win the final egg, a prize worth James Halliday’s entire fortune, about 240 billion dollars. This fictional novel follows the journey of Wade Watts, an 18 year old boy who is otherwise known as Parzival, his OASIS name, as he uses his knowledge of Halliday’s life to solve the puzzles and find the egg. Parzival works mainly alone, fending off others who want to find the egg and secrets, while also having to fight off a large company called IOI, otherwise known as the Sixers. I really enjoyed this book because it was adventurous, had a puzzle to figure out, and was easy to get lost in time reading this book. I would recommend this book to others because it was an enjoyable read. It also addressed the current struggles that the world is going through and a possible outcome that may happen if humans do not begin to stop their impacts on the Earth. The world that Wade lives in cannot find enough energy on the Earth and the city that he lives in is full of other stacks of trailer cars where many people live. The entire world is also going through a food crisis and many people escape with the OASIS. I would read more books similar to this and in my free time, I plan to read the second book, Ready Player Two. Ready Player One addressed the effects humans have had on the ecosystem and provided an adventure that was enjoyable to read.
