Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell (4/5)

When she was a small baby, a cruise ship that Sophie and her mother was on began to sink. Hours later, Sophie was found in a floating cello case surrounded by wreckage and debris. Her mother was nowhere to be found so was presumed dead. Taking the situation into his own hands, the young man who found Sophie took her in as his own. The man’s name was Charles and he raised Sophie who grew up into a wild and strange young girl who did not match the female standards of their era. However, this was not an issue to Charles and Sophie and they lived peacefully until a problem arose with child protective services that threatened to take Sophie away to an orphanage. While upset, Sophie discovers a clue to a mystery she had always wondered about. Sophie found an address to where she believed to be where her mother was. Despite everyone else telling her it was impossible, Sophie always firmly believed that her mother was alive somewhere. Although Charles never had shared this belief, the address gave both him and Sofie a hopeful urge to search for her mother. On an impulse, they leave for France to go “motherhunting” and to escape the child protective services. There, Sophie searches for hints while meeting people who help her along the way.

I really like Rooftoppers (Katherine Rundell) because it is very creative and it shows so many emotions. Most likely, there are many ideas and concepts you’ve never heard of in this book. The unique and interesting characters keep you entertained and are so likable that you can root for them throughout the whole book. Unlike other books which can sometimes be described as a wild rollercoaster of events and emotions, this book can be a lullaby with occasional sped up parts. The whole story is like poetry, all the words and descriptions compliment each other perfectly. It is an easy book to read and understand. It is also a lighter book for people who are looking for a quicker read (Total of 277 pages). Overall, I would suggest this book for people who are interested in historical fiction and adventure but I think that this book is enjoyable for many different people who are interested in different subjects.
