"Say What You Will" by Cammie McGovern

“Say What You Will” by Cammie McGovern is a young adult fiction book about a disabled girl falling in love with one of her peer helpers. Amy, a very smart high school senior with cerebral palsy convinces her skeptical mother to have student helpers, assist her with her daily tasks around the school. One of her peer helpers, Matthew, a boy with undiagnosed OCD, skeptically, after a lot of begging, joins Amy’s peer helper group. The point of the peer group is to not only help Amy with her needs but also to help her make friends and be more involved with the school. Throughout the story, Amy realizes that Matthew has OCD and tries to help him by having him do things that make him uncomfortable. Matthew treated Amy like a normal person, he didn’t baby her because of her condition. The more the two spend together the more they start to like each other. The theme of the book is to love someone for who they are and not what they look like. Before I read the book I thought it was just going to be about a boy and girl falling in love, now after reading this I realized that the book was about two people with different disorders helping each other through their problems. Cammie McGovern did a great job telling the story about how two people who have a disorder can help each other. The author describes a lot about Matthew’s OCD and Amy’s cerebral palsy and how it affects them, she really conveyed how people with these disorders live their lives. I feel like this book can inspire others, Amy helps show how even though she relies on people to help her with simple tasks she still manages to excel in school. Overall it was a great book I’m glad I read it I learned more about OCD and cerebral palsy and I enjoyed the story. I believe people who have these disorders can relate to these characters. My advice for future readers is that if you like romantic books this book is for you.
