In a world where death by natural causes has been eliminated almost entirely and the Thunderhead, a governing higher power stays ever watchful, ‘scythes’ are responsible for controlling the rapidly growing population. Exempt from the law and oversight by the Thunderhead, scythes are expected to do the dirty work, as part of the Scythedom, an independent organization founded near the beginning of the twenty-first century. The story revolves around two unsuspecting teenagers, Citra and Rowan who would’ve never expected to be scythe’s apprentices. The new era of their lives first began when Scythe Faraday gleaned two of their acquaintances and later had the audacity to offer them an apprenticeship. As instructed by the Scythedom, they were to move in with Scythe Faraday and abandon their past lives. First taken aback by Faraday’s orthodox views of Scythedom, Citra and Rowan soon come to take the Scythe for granted and were never prepared for what was to come.
I really enjoyed Scythe and all the plot twists it threw at me. I may be biased, as dystopian novels are my favorite genre, but I highly recommend the book. I found the overall storyline of the novel to be very creative and original, which is oftentimes hard to do with science fiction.
Shusterman does a good job of character development throughout the novel as they find out more about themselves and grow their character. Another thing Shusterman does well is creating a suspenseful and captivating storyline which I found very enjoyable.
