Scythe - Neal Shusterman, 5/5

Scythe is a fictional, Sci-Fi book set in the future after death has been “cured”, there are no longer any problems in the world, and there is also no government, and the world is entirely run by AI, which they call the Thunderhead. But now that there is no longer a way to simply die of old age, for population control, they must render a new way to keep the numbers in check. They call it ‘gleaning’. Gleaning is done by a scythe, a regular person whose only job is to glean, and they are above all law. But, it was decided that the Thunderhead would not have power over the scythedom, so they governed themselves. As two scythe apprentices, Citra and Rowan, learn more and more about the scythedom and what it’s like to be a scythe, they also learn about the scythedom teetering on the edge of total destruction.

This book was one of the best books I have ever read. I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy books, and this one beat Harry Potter right out of the water. I ended up reading the whole book in one weekend because I was so interested in the plot. There was never a dull moment, always some kind of anticipation, and so many plot twists. The protagonists and antagonists were beautifully portrayed and I was able to picture it all in my head. I was kept on the edge of my seat, yelling at the author for any plot twists I didn’t see coming, and needing to take a moment, put the book down, and assess exactly what I was thinking, what just happened, and so much more! This book got me loving and hating Citra, Rowan, and the Thunderhead! I didn’t know it was possible to see a personality in a fictional AI character, but I saw it all in this book. I immediately went to get the second book.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Harry Potter, Unwanteds, or The Hunger Games, as I truly believe this book is up there with these masterpieces. Scythe is in my top five books, if not the first.
