See Me by Nicholas Sparks (2/5)

Review:

Love can be found in the most odd situations, never to be expected.

Background:

The book See Me written by Nicholas Sparks is an unexpected romance between two very different people. See Me is a relatively newer book being published in 2015. The book is also somewhat of a similar theme to Nicholas’ other books, having an overall story of a love life. Most notably, he’s written The Notebook which was published in 1996.

To begin, the main character, Colin, is trying to get his life back together. Already 28 years old, his life has consisted of wrong doings that has led him down a path of violence and fighting. On the other hand, Maria, almost has her whole life together, but still struggles with her life at work. Their lives cross paths one day on a rainy day on the side of the road. Maria encounters her first car breakdown but is helped by none other than Colin. Colin, who has basically lived his life as a fighter, is beaten and looks very threatening. Maria logically is terrified of Colin due to his overall appearance.

After this first encounter with each other, unexpectedly, they continue to grow a passion for each other that would’ve never seemed feasible to them earlier on. This relationship kindles and grows over the course of the book.

Critique:

To put it bluntly, this book had some flaws; The book had a good plot to it but it was definitely a long read and monotonous one at that. Parts of the story felt a little played out and anticipated which made the book somewhat boring. However, the plot made up for the time spent reading the book. With over 300 pages, the book is quite long for a story/first person view narration. I think that it could’ve been shorter and more quick to the ending. The beginning part of the novel however was surprisingly good based on how the later chapters/sections of the book felt.

I would say the best part of the novel is the dialogue. At times, while it’s difficult to understand who’s talking, the amount of depth the Sparks uses to allow these characters to talk is simply incredible. The book basically ran on dialogue, narration, and first/third-person views.

Final Thoughts:

While I don’t rate the book as high as others, I still think it’s a good read for anyone who is looking for a story to follow along in. The story is peaceful and doesn’t require that much attention to detail to try understanding the story. I’d also recommend that you read other books by Nicholas Sparks in order to get a feel for his style of writing. The Notebook by far is one of his greatest books and is definitely a must read for anyone looking for romance novels. Overall, I’d recommend this to students and probably more young-adult audiences.
