In the Russian-inspired land of Ravka, there are two types of people. Those who have mastered the ‘small sciences’ also known as the Grisha, and peasants. While what the Grisha do might look like magic, seemingly summoning fire from their hands, and controlling the tides as easily as breathing, It is an art only mastered by those with the gift. This once mighty land has been separated for centuries by the shadow fold, a wall of shadows that house creatures only imaginably in your nightmares, separating the nation's coast from their mainland. Alina Starkov is just a mapmaker in the first army, the common people who make up the majority of the Ravkas fighting force, about to make her first journey across the shadow fold. But when things go wrong and her best friend is on the brink of death, something awakens inside her, and she learns that she might be the key to reuniting the nation as one. While this book has its fair amount of slightly embarrassing YA romance, once you peel the first layers off, this book becomes a wonderfully complex world of fantasy and magic. This is only book one in a three-part story, with 2 other spin-off duologies taking place in the same universe. I personally love this book, and its entire series has earned a place on my bookshelf. If you do decide to pick up this book, be ready for your nights spent under the blanket, feeling the cold mystery that radiates from every page of this book.
