What craziest allergies have you heard of? Allergic to the sun? Water? Well, our main protagonist can't be physically touched. Her name is Juliette Ferrars, a girl who got locked up not because of an allergy to people, but a power to kill with her lethal touch. As a child, she was told never to touch or be touched until one day she saw a child in need of help as he was getting abused by his mother. Juliette could help it and pulled him away from the attack. Little did she know the small act of kindness led to the little boy's death, ultimately scarring her of the world, and getting locked up in solitary confinement until she met the Male protagonists Adam Kent and Aaron Warner. She is faced with a dilemma of whether to follow the ‘good guys’ or the ‘bad guys’.
This book is part of a 5 book series called the Shatter Me series. This book is the first of the series and is known to be a slow burner. It was published in 2011, the book is quite old but the newest book was released in 2021. A good thing to note before reading this series is that there are small novels that you could read in between the 5 major books. They just give you extra detail and sometimes another person's point of view. I didn't read the novellas but it was still fun and enjoyable to read. Personally, I liked it and found no problem with it but again, I haven't read the full series to know which book is better than the rest. The author Tahereh Mafi is the #1 internationally bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author of books for children and young adults and nominated for several awards. She has many books in the same genre if you are interested and like this series.
This book is filled with unexpected twists and turns you go from loving one character to despising them and wishing for the worst. The book is an easy and fast read and you truly will want to keep reading and maybe finish the whole series just from this book. Although the plot twists are nice once in a while this book is filled with them. So if you are not the person to get attached to a character easily I recommended you read this book, if not then this might be a hassle to read. All in all, I give it a 4-star rating it was good but I know the other books in the series will top it. Before reading it I was hesitant because the book was mainstream and everyone liked it so maybe it wants for me, but I did enjoy it and would recommend the series to family and friends.
